Choose by use
Image formats are different ways to save a file, not a simple quality ranking. The best choice depends on the image, the file size you need, and the app where you will use it.
At a glance
| Format | Compression | Transparency | Best for | Things to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPG | Lossy | No | Photos, documents, uploads | Small text and edges can soften |
| PNG | Lossless | Yes | Logos, UI, screenshots | Can be large for photos |
| WebP | Lossy or lossless | Yes | Images used on websites | May not open in older apps |
Why JPG and WebP work well for photos
Photos contain many colors and subtle changes. JPG and WebP can reduce that data to make a smaller file, while PNG often stays much larger.
For small text, faces, hair, and product edges, open the result at the size it will actually be used.
Why PNG works well for logos and screenshots
PNG keeps transparent backgrounds and crisp graphic edges. It is a good fit for logos, icons, UI, and screenshots with text.
What changes during conversion
Conversion saves the current pixels in a new format. Transparent areas become white in JPG, and an animated WebP becomes one still image. Keep the original when you need its camera information.
Choose a format in three steps
- Check which formats the destination accepts.
- Decide whether you need a transparent background.
- Compare the file size and percentage change after conversion.
